Currently, half of the cases we see in our daily consultations are related to male infertility.
The semen analysis is the most common test to assess and diagnose these problems. Results are obtained by analyzing a semen sample from the patient in our andrology laboratories.
Once these samples are analyzed, our specialists can identify pathologies or issues with seminal quality that could be affecting fertility.
What are the main techniques for sperm retrieval?
REMS Test (Recovery of Motile Sperm):
This technique helps identify recoverable motile sperm from a semen sample. Two methods can be used:
- Swim up: Washing and centrifuging sperm to separate motile from immotile.
- Density gradients: Increasing density filters are applied to isolate motile sperm.
Once these sperm are analyzed and test results are available, we can determine the best treatment to assist the couple in conceiving.
Testicular Sperm Aspiration (TESA):
Sperm are directly extracted through a puncture in the testicles. This is done in cases of vasectomy or DNA damage.
Testicular Biopsy:
A sample of testicular tissue is extracted for examination. It is recommended in cases of severe alterations in semen quality that could cause chromosomal abnormalities in sperm.
